Leclerc's compact jack loom
The Leclerc Nilus is a sturdy 4-shaft jack loom with a low castle. It was Leclerc's first jack loom and for a long time one of the best-known jack looms anywhere. It has been back in production since 1998. The shafts work independently, so the Nilus suits almost any yarn and weave structure. A friction brake keeps the warp tension even, and the front and back beams are removable. Folded, the 4-shaft version is only 63 cm deep.
Nilus or Nilus II? Short on space, or on the shorter side? Then the Nilus is a good fit. If you want a larger shed or are looking for a counterbalance or countermarche loom, take a look at the Leclerc Nilus II.

Models
4 shafts Jack-Type: The classic Nilus with 6 treadles. You can tie up each treadle to any combination of shafts. Can be upgraded to 8 shafts with back hinge treadles.
8 shafts Back Hinge Treadles: The treadles are hinged at the back. Rockers keep the tie-up cords at the same tension at rest and when pressed. You get a large, clean shed even with 6 or more shafts and at high warp tension, as in rug weaving, and treadling feels as light as on a 4-shaft loom.
Options
- Sectional warp beam with 1" or 2" sections
- Double back beam
- Flying shuttle beater
- Weaving bench
- Texsolv heddles instead of steel heddles
Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the Nilus and the Nilus II?
The Nilus is smaller and more compact and uses 26.8 cm (10½") heddles. The Nilus II has 31.7 cm (12½") heddles and therefore a larger shed. It is deeper, which makes treadling easier at high warp tension, but it takes a little more floor space. The Nilus II is also available as a counterbalance and countermarche loom. The Nilus is especially comfortable for weavers with shorter legs.
Can I upgrade to 8 shafts later?
Yes. With the upgrade kit you can convert any 4-shaft Nilus to 8 shafts with back hinge treadles.
Does the back hinge version fold?
Yes. To fold the back of the loom completely, unhook the treadles first.
