Leclerc's large jack loom
The Leclerc Colonial v2 is a large jack loom with 8 or 12 shafts and back hinge treadles. It is made of Canadian maple with a clear finish, so the grain stays visible. You can use it as an all-round loom or set it up for specific techniques. The jacks sit in the castle at the top, so less effort is needed to lift the shafts.
Leclerc thoroughly revised the Colonial in 2008:
- larger, cleaner shed
- the treadles are lower at the front for more comfortable treadling
- the jacks run on bushings
- a new tie-up system saves time and keeps cords from getting mixed up

Frequently asked questions
How does the Colonial v2 differ from the Nilus II?
Both use 31.7 cm heddles and come in 115 and 150 cm weaving widths. On the Colonial v2 the jacks sit at the top; at 173 cm it is much taller, and it is deeper and heavier, and does not fold. In return it is available with 12 shafts and an overhead beater. The Nilus II folds, takes less space and is also available as a counterbalance or countermarche loom.
Can I upgrade the 8-shaft to 12 shafts later?
The current Leclerc catalogue does not list an upgrade kit for this. If you already know you will need more than 8 shafts, go straight for the 12-shaft version. Feel free to contact us with any questions.
