Why the AVL Studio Dobby Loom?
Designed for teaching and design – not for compromise. The SDL is not a simplified loom but a specialized one. Instead of production mechanics like cloth storage or automatic warp advance, AVL focused on ease of use, simple maintenance, and space-saving compactness – qualities that are critical in teaching and design work. Anyone developing patterns, testing structures, or teaching students to weave gets exactly the right tool here.
The Compu-Dobby makes complex structures accessible. Even in this compact form, the Compu-Dobby® 5 controls each shaft individually, pick by pick. Satin, plain weave, twill, deflected double weave – all possible, with a weaving width that enables real projects without dominating the studio.
Robust for everyday use. "Compact workhorse" – that describes the SDL aptly. Kiln-dried hardwood, sliding beater, and proven AVL mechanics are built for intensive use. The loom holds up, even with daily use.

Frequently Asked Questions
What's the difference between the SDL and the V-Series? The SDL is designed for patterns, samples, and teaching environments – without production mechanics. The V-Series, by contrast, is a full home studio loom with E-Lift and larger weaving width (up to 102 cm).
Is the SDL suitable for real projects or just samples? Both. The 30" version works well for scarves, shawls, and decorative fabrics. The 20" version is ideal for structural patterns, color samples, and teaching.
Is the SDL available for universities? Yes – the SDL was explicitly developed for universities and design studios. It's easy to maintain and built to be robust for daily use.
What software is compatible? WeavePoint, Fiberworks, PixeLoom, and any software that exports .wif files. AVL Drive is included for free.
